On a beautiful Sunday Morning we had nine riders meet at Marion Square Park at 10AM. We had a very nice family of four on two tandems for this first SSR of the season. We also had another new rider Bruce Teimann. A big welcome to the new folks that joined us today. We headed north up 10th street, to Lowe Park, and then on the Alburnett rd, and Alburnett, while there we stopped for some refreshments at the convenient store and a short rest then we headed west out of Alburnett to North C Ave extension, then back to Alburnett road and , Lowe Park and then back to the square. We had perfect warm weather with very little wind. The Leu girls did an awesome job on the tandems. I think that is the farthest they have ridden. Thank you all for participating, and hope to see you again soon on a SSR. |

|
Riders: Art Sibold, Dorie Kelchen, Ken Klein and his son Jordan Klein, Jason Amoriell, Denise and Bob Potter.
After a rain soaked morning, the skies cleared and the afternoon opened for a ride. We met at Marion Square at 1:00 PM and rode North to the County Home Road and then East to Whittier. We regrouped there and our webmaster said goodbye having ridden in the morning as well. We continued on to Waubeek and then to Central City where we took a rest stop at the convenience store. After a bit we crossed the highway and headed West to the Alburnett corner and south to the Corner Store in Alburnett.. The entire ride heading south was slow going due to the wind. |

On this Saturday morning in late May, we had cool conditions, with a "breeze,"---a breeze that would become a nice tailwind on the way home. We headed down the trail, and re-grouped at Jersey's, and on into Ely---to Solon---to the Clubhouse for breakfast (where we got our picture for Grandma)--to North Liberty---back up 965, and through Swisher---and on to 76th, to the trail and back to GSP. We had a great group, and I think we all had a good ride and a good time. Thanks to all who participated! |

Dan Tucker, Valerie Boddicker, Todd & Rebecca Dickinson, Art Sibold
It was a nice day with the temps near seventy. Many of the riders were in short sleeve shirts and sandals. We got started around 11AM and decided to head east, so we could partake in the “Stand Still Parade” in Whalen and view the repairs made to the trail since last years flood. In Whalen, we stopped to view the exhibits in the parade and some had some of the ethnic snacks that were available. We then biked on to Peterson where we caught a little of a girl's softball game and had a nice lunch at Judy’s Café. Two riders decided to head back to Lanesboro, while the other pressed on to Rushford. I expected to see lots of damage from last years flood in Rushford. It appears that the town is back with no noticeable damage seen on my part. Several of the riders headed off for ice cream while the rest waited at the old train depot. We picked up the pace a little on the way back to Lanesboro, as we had reservations for dinner at 6PM. We had one incident on the way back where two bikers touched wheels and one went down. The result was a scrapped knee. The food and beverages were great at the “Root on the River”, as always. Our waitress, Monica, was on her first day on the job. The twelve diners had a great time with her, and she was a willing participant in the fun. After dinner back to the campground and the required camp fire. There were lots of good beverage, smores, snacks, and conversation around the fire. Lanesboro also had their “Bluff County Gathering” this weekend. There were fiddlers, violin etc. players throughout the campgrounds and city, playing music all day. In the evening there was a barn dance in the community building. A good group of riders, definitely the best ever, in May 2008, for the annual HBA spring trek to Root River. |

| May 10 | Jim Bernstein | First Annual Forget Ride | 52 miles |
|
Riders: Laurie, Todd, Cathy, Jim
It was a ride to forget. Jim forgot the rider sign-up sheet. Laurie forgot her helment (she was able to reach Todd before he left home, and he brought one for her). And Cathy forgot the cereal bar she purchased in Palo, leaving it on the mini-mart ice chest - a delectable treasure for some lucky soul to discover. My apologies to the riders planning on a 40-mile ride to Vinton, which apparently cannot be done. It was a good 26 miles there from CVNT. After a hearty breakfast at the 218 Family Restaurant, we returned via the Urbana loop in a light drizzle, which ended once we got to Urbana. Two of us returned to CVNT via Center Point and the others took the rollers to Shellsburg. |

| May 3 | Bernie Smith | GSP - Spanish Road Loop | 18 miles |
|
Riders: Ken Klein, Mark Dimke, Bernie Smith
On our chilly HBA ride this morning, we decided to not take the "trailed closed" sign just downriver from Sokol Park too literally. (We being Ken Klein, Mark Dimke and yours truly.) Well, it wasn't under water but there was lots of mud left over from recent floods and even a dead carp lying next to the trail at one point. We walked through the mud at a couple of spots, then pedaled on down to C. St. near Jerseys, enjoyed the strong tailwind down to 76th, east to Spanish Road then south to Wright Bros. Slow going on the way back into strong headwind/crosswind, and we stayed off the muddy part of the trail on the way back. Bath day for the bicycle. Yours truly is probably due, too. |
